About the Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center
The Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center is a masjid and Islamic educational center located in Cambridge, Maryland. Established to serve the Muslims of Cambridge and the surrounding communities, the Center seeks to provide a place where Muslims can worship Allah, acquire beneficial Islamic knowledge, strengthen their faith, and develop bonds of brotherhood with one another.
Our Purpose
The masjid has always occupied a central place in the life of the Muslim community. It is a place of worship, knowledge, remembrance of Allah, brotherhood, guidance, and service.
The Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center seeks to fulfill this essential role for Muslims living in Cambridge. Our primary purpose is to provide an environment in which Muslims can fulfill their religious duties to Allah while growing in their knowledge and practice of Islam.
Although the Center primarily serves the Muslim community of Cambridge, we welcome Muslims from neighboring communities, including Church Creek, Secretary, East New Market, Trappe, Hurlock, Federalsburg, and other areas throughout Maryland’s Mid-Shore.
Reason for Its Establishment
The establishment of the Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center grew out of circumstances that brought attention to the need for a local Islamic presence in Cambridge.
Approximately two years before the establishment of the Center, a Muslim high school student in Cambridge experienced bullying from non-Muslim students because of her faith. Muslims from outside the immediate area became involved in supporting the student and her family and helping to address the situation.
As part of that community response, a neighborhood barbecue was organized, bringing Muslims and non-Muslims together in an atmosphere of fellowship and outreach. During the gathering, a number of local residents identified themselves as Muslims. Their presence revealed something significant: there were more Muslims living within the Cambridge community than had previously been apparent, yet there was a need for a local institution where they could gather for worship, Islamic education, and fellowship.
The gathering also became an occasion for introducing others to Islam, and several individuals accepted Islam that day.
These events helped demonstrate the need for a permanent Islamic presence within Cambridge itself—one capable of serving Muslims already living in the community, supporting those newly entering Islam, educating the next generation, and providing a place where Muslims could gather around their shared faith.
The Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center was subsequently established in response to that need, with the aim of developing a lasting masjid and center of Islamic education and service for the Muslims of Cambridge and the surrounding communities.
Worship and Islamic Education
Worship and the pursuit of beneficial knowledge form the foundation of our work.
The Center provides a place for congregational worship and seeks to develop educational opportunities through which Muslims can learn the fundamentals of their religion and gain the knowledge necessary to practice Islam in their everyday lives.
As the Center grows, we intend to expand our educational efforts for adults, youth, families, and new Muslims through regular classes, Qur’an instruction, seminars, workshops, mentorship, and other beneficial programs.
Our objective is not merely to provide information, but to encourage knowledge that produces stronger faith, sound worship, good character, responsible families, and Muslims who positively contribute to the communities in which they live.
Community and Service
We believe that a strong masjid should be a source of benefit both to those who worship within it and to the community around it.
For this reason, the Center seeks to combine worship and Islamic education with beneficial community service. As our resources and capabilities grow, we intend to develop initiatives that address real needs within Cambridge and the surrounding area, while creating opportunities for Muslims to serve, cooperate, and contribute positively to their community.
Our Vision
Our vision is to establish the Talha ibn Ubaidillah Center as a lasting Islamic institution in Cambridge: a masjid in which Allah is worshipped, Islamic knowledge is taught, Muslims are brought together, families and youth are strengthened, and those in need are served.
We seek to develop the Center gradually and responsibly, building upon the needs of the community and the resources Allah provides.
We ask Allah to grant success to these efforts, make the Center a source of guidance and benefit, and enable it to serve generations of Muslims in Cambridge and the surrounding communities.
